Ariadne watched the tribute wait in line As Theseus tied the gold thread fast To the entrance of that cursed design Where so many souls had passed Through winding paths and hallowed halls Where light retreats and sanity frays He led the others past ancient walls Following magic's golden ways She did not see her brother fall But she knew Theseus’s sword cut to the chase Even then, she knew power corrupts all Evil doesn’t always have a monster’s face With the Minotaur slain, Theseus wasted no time He heard the tick of the clock He traced the thread's familiar line And fled to the trusty dock Ariadne sprinted to the ship, while chaos spread Her family blind to her betrayal No hint of whose hand had led To this unthinkable upheaval She reached the ship and climbed aboard Theseus welcomed her with practiced grace Relief was thus restored But something cold lived in his face From sea, she watched Crete fade Crystal waves and gleaming sand A beautiful prison her family made Now forever a foreign land She tried to claim her promised place Beside the hero she'd set free But found only empty space And reasons why it couldn't be When will we wed? She'd gently press As he had sworn upon escape Soon he'd say after a soft caress Once things take proper shape On the island of Naxos they made their stay Camp set beneath the swaying palms Songs and wine closed out the day As night spread wide its arms His goodnight kiss was honey-sweet A promise of the life ahead She dreamed of the joy so near complete But at dawn he left her sleeping on the beach — Theseus had fled.
